President’s Message for May and June

Happy June!

I am excited that we are choosing to focus this newsletter on the many International Coaching Week events this year that brought our membership together and also served to reach out to our business community.  It’s been a whirlwind of activity – proudly supported not only by your Board, but also several committee members.

Striving to create a mix of awareness for members and the community, and ensuring a balance of face-to-face and virtual options, the ripple effect was felt from Comox, through Nanaimo, in Duncan and down through to Victoria.  From a lunch and learn to a Chamber of Commerce, to a coaching demo and laser coaching sessions for a business – a big thank you to our members who stepped up to offer the experience of being coached.  Your efforts have expanded someone’s understanding of the power of professional coaching.

In case you missed the opportunity to participate, I hope the short articles in this newsletter about the many ICW activities will give you a reason to celebrate this amazing profession and organization you have joined.

As with all experiences, there was learning for everyone, including for us, your Board.  We appreciate the feedback around not only the effectiveness of the events, but also around the trickiness of our communication about ICW week.  We are trying to balance our desire to reach out, with some compassion for email overload, and in that endeavor, some of you may not feel as if you had enough information about what we planned for the week.  We are reviewing our approach and will launch our week differently next year.  Please share your ideas with Carol at communications@vicoaches.org  on how to best loop you in!

And finally, what a dynamic organization!  I am thrilled to see members stepping up to share their expertise, helping is to grow in our understanding and skills.  The exchange of knowledge is gracious and generous. So far this year we have experienced Ethics (in three parts) with Lily Seto, Mary Prefontaine and Michael J. Marx, Preparing for your PCC with Tracey Burns, and Conversational Intelligence with Diane Lloyd.  That’s one per month, not even counting the ICW events!

Thanks for breathing life into our chapter,

Tracy Houser

International Coaching Week May 18-24, 2015

 ICF20

Calling all Coaches!! Get involved! International Coaching Week is Coming

May 18 – 24th, 2015!

ICW

International Coaching Week (ICW) is an annual week-long global celebration of the coaching profession. It’s our chapter’s coaches who make ICW successful here across Vancouver Island. Help spread the word about coaching, by getting involved!

This year’s celebration of coaching is extra special, as it also marks the International Coach Federation’s 20th Anniversary.

Let’s make this year’s celebration extra special. The chapter is looking to you to volunteer a little time to organize events in your communities across the island, with a focus on:

  1. Planning and participating in learning events in our island communities and digitally, that will inspire you and provide CCEU credits, and
  2. Setting up promotional events connecting coaches to niche markets in our communities!

Learning Events:

A number of local coaching learning event topics (CCEU credits pending), offered during the week are already in planning stages. See our Chapter’s events page for more information. Topics include:

  • May 19: The secret to goal setting (webinar) (NOTE: date change from May 18th originally) In this one hour webinar, business Coach Inga Michaelsen will share with you the most common mistakes we make when setting our goals, and how to avoid these potential pitfalls. Inga will also speak to the importance of setting the “right” goals – the ones that are in alignment with your deepest values and most authentic desires. Once you are clear on these, working with goals will bring more focus, fun, inspiration, momentum and success to your business and life. This webinar is worth 1 CCEU.
  • May 19: Branding your coaching business (webinar)Branding Your Coaching Business is a 90-minute interactive webinar with author and business coach Mike Iamele. Over the course of the session, you will learn a highly effective and radically different approach to communicating and marketing your business. Developed from years in public relations, Mike’s A-C-M branding system will teach you who your audience is, how to find them, how to differentiate yourself in your industry, and how to keep a consistent branding across everything you do.  This webinar will help you look at branding in a whole new (and more fun) light. This presentation is worth 1.5 CCEUs (resource).
  • May 20: Sales can be a breeze: Mastering the core competencies to increase sales (webinar)Join Coach Carla Reeves for this 60-minute webinar and you’ll learn:
    • Why coaches struggle to sell coaching – there are 6 key problems.
    • How to overcome these 6 problems – one at a time.
    • How to leverage the Core Competencies to master sales.
    • How to equip yourself to have easy sales conversations.
    • How to demonstrate value and easily justify your price.
    • How to increase your sales confidence.

This webinar is worth 1 CCEU (core competency).

As part of the 20th Anniversary of ICF, ICF Western Regional Chapters in British Columbia, Alberta and south of the border in Washington, Oregon and California have also joined together to collaborate on regionally-offered digital or web-based events. Stay tuned for more events we can all connect to, learn from and celebrate across Western North America.
Promotional Events – Engagement and Promotional Opportunities!

As part of promoting ICW on May 18-24, we are looking for coaches inspired to:

  • Network, promote coaching and provide coaching demonstrations to people working or interested in your coaching niches, in your own communities. Let us know what niche(s) you work in and the people/organizations you would connect to and we’ll add your volunteer demos to the ICW Events Calendar!

Get involved!
Contact Robin Swets with your ideas, interest in participating or questions, at 250-217-8855, or email to vicepresident@vicoaches.org with the message “I’m interested”

ICW A Week of Connection and Inspiration

Thanks to everyone involved for making International Coaching Week a great week of learning, connection and inspiration.  There were over 40 attendees at the various events from Victoria and beyond. We were thrilled to attract community members who are keen to get into the coaching profession!

I personally had the opportunity to sit in on a couple of sessions.  The Wholehearted Resilient Coach facilitated by Laurie Hillis was a powerful and insightful morning session.  Laurie’s engaging and authentic presence invited all of us to open up and explore some key concepts around bringing more of ourselves to our work.

Something I continue to go back to is the idea of the arena … picture Russell Crowe entering the arena in Gladiator but put yourself in his shoes facing any situation that involves risk and courage.  The people in the cheap seats are those who take shots at us without ever having entered the arena themselves. Brene Brown calls these folks “twitter thugs” and as she in fact did tweet,” If you’re not in the arena getting your butt kicked too, I’m not interested in your feedback.” Touche. I have spent way too much time listening to people who have never put themselves out there!

I also participated in Diane Lloyd’s webinar, 4 Key Ingredients to a Sustainable Coaching Business, and was equally inspired and energized.  Diane suggested there are 4 relationships we need to nurture in order to grow our business sustainably – relationship to self, business, prospects and clients.

Diane started with the powerful message of “clear intention vs perfect action” which was a wonderful connection back to Brene Brown’s work. As a recovering perfectionist, I loved this idea and will use it as my mantra going into some of my own “arena” work.  I was struck by the idea of efforting … that is what part of my business takes up a lot of “effort” but doesn’t necessarily provide ease or flow.  Getting rid of these efforting parts of our business frees us up to build the business we really DO want.

I also loved her idea of know your story and share it. I was encouraged by this to put more of “me” into our business website.  Diane also provided a ton of suggestions for how to automate your businesss … highlighting several online tools that allow coaches to free up their time to do what they love most – coach!

Thanks again to all of our other presenters – Carolyn Crow, Tracey Gibson, Jennifer Britton, Francois Viquesnel and the Co-Active Coaching Community – and the participants who made it all happen! Unfortunately, we did have to cancel a couple of sessions due to low numbers but I appreciate the time and energy that these presenters put it up front.
