Please meet your ICF chapter members who have been nominated, are qualified as directors according to the BC Societies Act and have agreed to stand for nomination to the 2018 Board of Directors.

 

EXECUTIVE

President: Tracy Houser – Victoria: second, one-year term

Tracy Houser is a strong, thoughtful communicator who is passionate about coaching and growth and development. She focuses her energy on bringing out the best in people. Ever curious and open to new possibilities, she fuels her passion through her own constant learning and leadership development.

Tracy holds a Masters in Fine Arts and several certifications in coaching, mentoring and change management. She is credentialed as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) through the ICF. Her career experience ranges from small business to consulting, university teaching to international touring, and private industry to public service.

Although she is currently the Director of the Change Management Office at the Natural Resource Transformation Secretariat in the BC Public Service, she believes that “leader” is not a title you are given, it is how you choose to show up.  So, despite her official title, her self-caption on her imaginary business card is “Possibility Artist”.

I see the Vancouver Island Chapter as a vibrant organization that connects members around the island to advance the coaching profession.  We gather to learn together, share insights and best practices, develop awareness in the community of the value and impact of coaching, and to be part of global coaching trends. 

We do what we can to advance coaching, with what we have, from where we are – holding space to honour and advance coaching here on Vancouver Island.

 

Vice President: Cheryl Joslin – Metchosin

Cheryl is a strategic thinker with a passion for helping business leaders from all levels transform cultures, improve communication, and inspire their businesses to thrive.  She has 35 years’ experience working in the service industry with corporations and business owners, and has held leadership position at multiple companies including McDonald’s, Cobs Bread, and KFC/Taco Bell.

Cheryl is an ICF credentialed coach, a Certified Executive Coach and a trained facilitator with extensive experience developing executing training programs for McDonald’s Restaurants.  She is fiercely committed to her clients’ success and provides the support they need to exceed their goals and foster growth within their companies.

Known for asking questions that get to the heart of the matter, Cheryl’s style supports her clients to make choices that decide their success.  When applied to an entire workforce or organization, this can have an amazing effect on the quality of work and overall company performance.

My vision is to be an integral part of inspiring the members and the chapter to thrive by attracting and developing the highest quality of professional coaches.

 

Secretary: Kim Arsenault – Nanaimo

Kim has a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Royal Roads University. She holds a ACC designation with ICF. Kim has a caring and engaging presence. She coaches and assists leaders in attaining the best re­sults from themselves and their people. Kim is an experienced consultant and coach who continuously receives excellent reviews from clients.

My vision is that our Vancouver Island chapter be accessible to all members and provide support and education for coaches at all levels. I have seen a very successful chapter grow and really address members needs in the last few years and have been interested in contributing to that.

Varek Boettcher –  Victoria

I have always been curious. I was that kid that took things apart to see how they worked. As I grew older that curiosity developed into a passion for technology and I turned it into an IT career working in the public and private sectors for more than twenty-six years.

My wife recently completed her M.A. in Leadership at RRU. As she was graduating, our discussions turned to where I wanted to take my career. As soon as she showed me the coaching program it seemed like such a natural fit for me.  I graduated in May of 2017.

As a newly minted executive coach, I’m very interested in the experiences of new graduates and addressing some of the issues they experience.  How does one start a coaching practice?  What are the steps?  Where are the pitfalls?  How can one leverage the experience of veteran coaches in support of new graduates?

My vision is of a group of passionate coaches that look for opportunities to support our local community in developing themselves, their skills and their businesses.

 

Gina Ross –  Nanaimo as of Jan 2018

Gina Ross is a professional life coach, event leader and speaker committed to freedom through authentic expression. She leads and coaches aspiring entrepreneurial women who want to ‘find their voice’, so they can begin their soul’s work. In a world inundated with messages that we have to be something other than who we truly are. These messages often creep into how we build our businesses. Or they prevent us from ever beginning to live the lives we deeply want.

Gina’s coaching supports aspiring entrepreneurs to find, heal and share their voice – the authentic expression that wants to have impact with the people they serve. Gina graduated from and is affiliated with accomplishment coaching and has been in business for three years. In her past life she was a certified counsellor, and brings a playful and spiritual intuition along for the ride in all her work.

My vision is that we have over 200 members who are engaged, connected and contributing to the Chapter by the end of 2018. This chapter can be an inspired and powerful conduit for all coaches in our catchment and I believe we can truly be an organization that supports all coaches to thrive in their businesses.

 

Janet Sheppard – Cobble Hill

As a coach with a background in psychology and education, I am passionate about supporting people as they challenge themselves to learn, grow, and change in the pursuit of their goals and dreams.  My previous career in higher education has also fuelled my own desire to learn continuously. As I move into this new phase of my own professional development, I am excited to meet and learn from my coaching colleagues too. I find this emerging profession stimulating and rewarding and I see belonging to the local chapter of the ICF as an opportunity to be part of contributing to its development too.

One thing I loved most of all in my previous career was supporting people who were open to learning, growing, and changing in an integrated way, transforming their sense of self as they challenged themselves to navigate their academic learning and their personal and life/work paths.

It’s that transformative possibility that continues to fuel my passion for learning as a coach.

My vision is for the Vancouver Island Chapter to grow and flourish by building relationships with new and emerging coaches through local and, eventually, distance coaching programs. I see the coaching community as a ‘learning community’, or a series of linked communities of practice.

I have had some of my richest and most rewarding experiences participating in a community of practice with other professionals – social learning is an important part of professional identity development. To engage new coaches early in their careers and provide opportunities to participate in social and situated learning is a way to contribute to their professional learning, but also to the emerging profession of coaching.

Michael Atkins – Victoria

Michael Atkins is a Certified Executive Coach, who specializes in leadership development. A scholar and practitioner of leadership, he holds a Masters of Arts in Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching; moreover, he has also completed Royal Military College of Canada’s Intermediate Leadership Program, a program only offered to select military leaders. With over 17 years of military experience, he has become extremely proficient in developing high performance teams capable of dealing with high-stake situations. Should he be elected as a member of the board, Michael is extremely motivated to work hard in support of the VI ICF constituency at large.

I would like to become engaged with supporting the local coaching community. In that, I would like to use my time as a board member to promote the needs of the VI ICF constituency at large.

Freefall through a different lens – from the President’s Corner

Hello Fall,

Welcome back to the season of renewal. It is the time for finding new routines and creating vibrant rhythms in our lives. As I watch the magnificent colour parade of changing foliage, feel the crispness in the air, and smell the autumn notes of pumpkin-spice lattes – my eye is drawn to the single floating leaf that glides along an unknown draft, heading gracefully to the ground.

And I think “Freefall.”

No, I am not a scientist and I was curious as to why this particular word came to mind so I looked it up.  Freefall, in mechanics, is the state of a body that moves freely in any manner in the presence of gravity.

Okay so there were a few other definitions such as “the part of a parachute jump before the parachute opens.” I was intrigued to read “An object in the technical sense of the term “free fall” may not necessarily be falling down in the usual sense of the term. An object moving upwards would not normally be considered to be falling, but if it is subject to the force of gravity only, it is said to be in free fall. “

And that is what I’m feeling within my ICF Vancouver Island Chapter work right now – Freefall.  I am trusting in the feeling of weightlessness as the board and I dive into chapter offerings, engage with our members, and look to co-create the future.  So, are we moving upward or, are we falling down?  Sometimes it’s a bit of both.

Feeling a Rush

It is a joy to savour connections as I make personal phone calls to former board members inviting them to share their perspective on the history of our chapter. As the pieces of our history slowly come together, there is momentum for a focus on the future.  I take a deep breath and ground myself in the present.

Presently, I am stretching my own coaching skills by mindfully applying several concepts I have discovered through workshops and webinars over the past several months. Specifically, I have been concentrating on three levels of conversations from Judith Glaser’s Conversational Intelligence, Polarity Thinking and the Magic of Metaphors in coaching. Big thanks to Diane Lloyd, Laurie Hillis and Lily Seto for challenging me to expand my thinking and coaching practice.

Falling in Love All Over Again

So where were we on this idea of freefalling?  Oh yes, there is movement that comes with this season.  Our chapter work is now finding that fall rhythm and sometimes it’s just closing your eyes and jumping.  Check out the remainder of this newsletter to catch some insights into the regional webinar we offered on Relationship Systems Coaching and reflections on our local chapter Breakfast with the Board event.

We also wanted to check in on the ups and downs of our chapter activities so we put out a short member survey to hear how things are landing (pun intended) for you.  As we look to the future, we want to know how to better serve you, so thanks for the feedback.

We are ready to dig in (or should I say “jump in”) and discover what is possible for 2018.  So buckle on your ‘shute because there is more opportunity for you to get connected and fall in love with coaching all over again.

Relationship Systems Coaching – a webinar with Marita Fridjhon

MEETING THE SYSTEM: COACHING FROM RELATIONSHIP SYSTEMS INTELLIGENCE (RSI)

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 – from 11 am to 12 pm PDT

Team Coaching is one of the most rapidly growing specializations within the coaching profession. And while we value the basic coaching skills of life/individual or executive coaching, it does require a different skill set in order for it to be effective. Many situations described as Team Coaching, from a systems perspective, actually is closer to what might be known as Group Coaching. In this webinar we will work on developing awareness for the difference between holding focus on the individuals within a team, vs making the Holonic shift to focusing on the collective entity of the entire team. In coaching intelligent teams, we hold the team entity to be the client instead of the individual players within the team. As we coach and engage with managers and leaders, it is important to bring modern Systems Thinking to bear on the vertical – personal – development as leader. In this webinar Marita will work on developing awareness for the difference between holding focus on the individual and/or the entire team.

The session will focus briefly on the 5 Principles of RSI, followed by a demonstration of operationalizing at least one of these principles to reveal the intelligent team that is available to the individual, partnership or team.

Outcomes

  • Learn with Marita how to coach clients to work with all their different parts, which is the first system and relationship set to work with.
  • Create a coaching agreement around how relationship matters and that it starts with being with the self, all of the self.
  • Build trust and intimacy with clients discovering their internal interdependence between different selves all playing a role in the client’s individual expression.
  • With powerful questions, coach clients how to leverage the strengths of different aspects of self.
  • Create a bridge between the systemic approaches in coaching teams, to the systemic approach in working with individuals.

Marita is a coach and co-author of the ICF-accredited Organization and Relationship Systems Coaching (ORSC™) program, and CEO of CRR Global Inc. CRR Global currently has partners delivering programs through a global faculty of trainers in 15 different countries throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, Turkey, Israel and United Arab Emirates.

President’s Message and Invitation for ALL previous Board Members

“Long, Long Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away….” Nope, that one was science fiction.

“Once Upon a Time…” No, no – that was a fairytale.

“Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start…”  Caught you humming?

Well we can’t all sing like Julie Andrews in Sound of Music, but she did have a point. So where did the Vancouver Island Chapter of ICF start? How has our story unfolded? The Board recently held a second retreat to plan for the remainder of the year and beyond. We got curious about the chapter history.

A Vibrant Future

To make plans for the future, it is helpful to know where we came from. As part of ensuring we continue to have a strong, vibrant chapter, we are looking at succession management.  Here are some of the pieces we are working on:

  1. Recruitment Strategy 2018 – Nomination Committee      
  2. Revised Board Role Descriptions
  3. Revised Chapter By-Laws
  4. Updated Onboarding Handbook and Materials

We realized that nowhere in our existing documentation is there a history of the Vancouver Island Chapter.  Rather than dig through boxes of old musty files, sleuthing out information that may (or may not) be captured, and trying to fit it together like an old puzzle without the lid to guide us…. We thought it would be far more fun, and effective, to ask our previous board members!

Message from the President – the half way point

And just like that, half the year has flown by!  From ethics to conversational intelligence, from polarity to inner critics, from strategic planning to hosting great conversations about the future of coaching… it’s been REAL.  By that, I mean it has been a time of building great RELATIONSHIPS, exploring and supporting a wide range of EVENTS and ACTIVITIES and of LEARNING about both coaching and leadership.

RELATIONSHIPS are the Foundation

I have had the opportunity to welcome new board members at the start of the year, to connect personally with many of our members at events in both Nanaimo and Victoria, to meet global leaders (ICF presidents) from around the world, and to build potential partnerships with other chapters.

One of the many things I love about the coaching community is the generosity of spirit.  When we reach out to one another, someone always steps in or up; for example to lead a coaching demo or offer laser coaching during International Coaching Week. Our members have offered workshops, training, and even door prizes for our events (gift certificates for coaching services, or handmade coaching cards). And a big thanks to the board members who have been supporting one another to ensure we deliver the quality services and experiences that we so mindfully committed to at the start of this year-long journey.

EVENTS and ACTIVITIES

As we strive toward the goal of advancing the coaching profession on Vancouver Island, we know that events and activities are a cornerstone of our development.  Having opportunities to network with one another, to share ideas, best practices, case studies, and resources – this is critical in a profession that depends on a code of ethics that maintains confidentiality.  We work alone, yet we belong to this incredible gracious community.

As members (and don’t forget, your board members are also ICF members) it is easy to get lost in our daily tasks or to keep our eye firmly fixed on the next set of deliverables.  We can quickly beat ourselves up for missing a workshop, not networking often enough, not taking advantage of everything that ICF offers, not, not, not.  Today, I propose that we take a moment to breathe and reflect on what has occurred, what has worked well for us, what we wish to celebrate or acknowledge:

 LEARNING … I just can’t get enough

I took on this role as a way to get more involved in this amazing professional community. I wanted to connect more often, be challenged in my thinking, and expand my understanding.  I honestly do not believe I had any idea of the depth and breadth of professional development opportunities that ICF makes available to us!

Now having the privilege of sitting in the President’s role, I want to support as many of the events and activities as possible, having a personal presence that models the learning organization that I believe us to be.  While it has not always been easy to carve out the time, as I reflect on the various sessions that I have attended, I am blown away by the growing I have been invited to do.

What is really weird is that I keep showing up at the sessions, and it seems as if each time, there is something going on in my professional or personal life that really needs that specific learning at that moment.  A shout out to Diane Lloyd for the conversational intelligence workshop (the 3 levels of conversations continues to resonate), and to Laurie Hillis for the polarity thinking workshop (my infinity loop could benefit from this new “and” perspective).

And if this wasn’t enough learning, my role as President offers a whole new treasure box as I delve into leading a volunteer board, strategic planning, connecting to the global organization, linking to regional activities and navigating all kinds of new technical tools.

And there is more to come!  Roll up your sleeves, or slip into your metaphorical swimsuit and jump right in.  The coaching water is truly fine.

President’s Message for May and June

Happy June!

 

I am excited that we are choosing to focus this newsletter on the many International Coaching Week events this year that brought our membership together and also served to reach out to our business community.  It’s been a whirlwind of activity – proudly supported not only by your Board, but also several committee members.

Striving to create a mix of awareness for members and the community, and ensuring a balance of face-to-face and virtual options, the ripple effect was felt from Comox, through Nanaimo, in Duncan and down through to Victoria.  From a lunch and learn to a Chamber of Commerce, to a coaching demo and laser coaching sessions for a business – a big thank you to our members who stepped up to offer the experience of being coached.  Your efforts have expanded someone’s understanding of the power of professional coaching.

In case you missed the opportunity to participate, I hope the short articles in this newsletter about the many ICW activities will give you a reason to celebrate this amazing profession and organization you have joined.

As with all experiences, there was learning for everyone, including for us, your Board.  We appreciate the feedback around not only the effectiveness of the events, but also around the trickiness of our communication about ICW week.  We are trying to balance our desire to reach out, with some compassion for email overload, and in that endeavor, some of you may not feel as if you had enough information about what we planned for the week.  We are reviewing our approach and will launch our week differently next year.  Please share your ideas with Carol at communications@vicoaches.org  on how to best loop you in!

And finally, what a dynamic organization!  I am thrilled to see members stepping up to share their expertise, helping is to grow in our understanding and skills.  The exchange of knowledge is gracious and generous. So far this year we have experienced Ethics (in three parts) with Lily Seto, Mary Prefontaine and Michael J. Marx, Preparing for your PCC with Tracey Burns, and Conversational Intelligence with Diane Lloyd.  That’s one per month, not even counting the ICW events!

Vancouver Island Coaches Association

Special President’s Message

It was such a great privilege to represent you, our Vancouver Island Chapter, at the ICF Global Leaders Forum in Warsaw, Poland, in late March.  It was a delight to share the work being done here on the island, to acknowledge our fabulous Leadership Team and you, our committed and passionate members.  I am so proud of the wide range of events, the gracious sharing and deep sense of community (including our outreach projects) that helps us advance the profession of coaching on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands!

The Poland experience was such an extraordinary opportunity on so many levels.  I couldn’t wait to share my hope and inspiration regarding you, my fellow coaches, as well as how I benefited in many unexpected ways.

Global Perspective

As I listened to coaching leaders from over 70 countries, I was reminded that our membership brings us connection to a huge and powerful coaching presence and energy in the world unlike any other—one that is completely based in helping humanity flourish all over the globe.

My eyes and ears were opened broadly; my sense of perspective about the fantastic coaching that is going on worldwide was greatly expanded.  I left Poland in awe of both global coaches and the Polish people.  There were astonishing projects tackled by both large and small ICF Chapters: projects with non-profits or in communities that extended way beyond individual coaching offerings.  Prism awards were given to many chapters; it was staggering to hear what these collective groups of coaches were able to accomplish in just one year.  (Go to ICF.org to read about these fantastic accomplishments)

Western Regional Advisory Committee

The Western Regional Advisory Council (WRAC) did great work and produced many new coaching connections.  Our 17 Western regional chapter leaders met Sunday afternoon where we dug into strategic priorities and how to tackle them on a regional level over the coming months in a way that will enhance the work of each chapter. Several of the ICF Global Board members dropped into our meeting, giving us the opportunity to ask questions and share feedback.

I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with Janet (UK), and Greg (Edmonton), Jude (Texas), John (Kelowna), Jennifer (Portland), Suzan (Tasmania, Australia), Diana (Romania), Denis (Ottawa), Barbara (Ohio), and the list goes on to include amazing coaches from Kenya, France, Hungary, Singapore, Spain, Poland and so many more.

Please join me during International Coaching Week for Postcards from Poland’ either in person in Nanaimo May 15th Postcards from Poland or Victoria May 18th Postcards from Poland or online May 24th Postcards from Poland.  I am planning to share some of the specific coaching projects, initiatives, learning and next steps from around the world. I was inspired by Quebec’s one-day coaching conference, humbled by the communication challenges in China, and intrigued by the work being done in Mumbai and Kenya.  I interviewed four global board members and captured their video messages to Vancouver Island chapter – fervently wishing you a sense of the excitement and hope for the future!

Our Wish For You

Your ICF Vancouver Island Leadership Team (Board) has launched the 2017 work of the chapter with our theme of ‘Infinite Possibilities’. Check out our 2017 Strategic Vision & Actions.  We have been busy offering learning opportunities (Ethics in 3 parts, Preparing for your PCC, Conversational Intelligence), writing up communications (2 newsletters, social media and event notifications), building community (February social event), administering renewals, welcoming new folks to meetings, offering support and guidance, and driving special event planning such as International Coaching Week – whew and it’s only April?

We will keep doing all those things and with the new connections through this Global Leadership Forum, we will tap into our peers in other chapters in our region as well as global best practices. To really take part in the smorgasbord, however, we need to do a better job of engaging you in something you are excited about. That’s my takeaway from GLF2017. This week finds our President, Tracy Houser, winging her way to the ICF Global Conference in Warsaw, Poland.  She takes with her our questions and contributions and of course, best wishes for safe travel.  The president from each chapter was asked to share their chapter’s strategic vision and plan.  Here is the graphic for ours:

Each level of the pyramid has intentions, goals and activities that the Leadership Team has taken on to support the membership.  For example, under Coaching Excellence, we identified:

  • Events to support Professional Development and Networking Opportunities – Creating opportunities for our members through strategic alliances with other associations – International Coach Week as the outcomes that we see as key to supporting Coaching Excellence.

2017 VICA Strategic Vision – Actions

The theme of Infinite Possibilities resonates throughout the Strategic Vision for 2017 and each communication we have with our membership reflects our commitment to that for every coach on Vancouver Island.

We will continue to tell you about ways to be involved, opportunities to learn and coach and reminders about how valuable it is to be in the company of other coaches.

Community Relations Project Request for expression of interest: coach-facilitators/trainers

Taking coaching to the community: a project about learning, connecting and contributing

SUMMARY

This year-long project is designed to build relationships with our communities through coaching demonstrations while building and enhancing skills for member-coaches.

For 2017-2018, community relations work will focus on bringing coaching demonstrations into organizations and businesses in communities on Vancouver Island.

The project involves:

  • recruiting experienced coaches to learn new skills and deliver coaching demonstrations;
  • securing coach facilitators and trainers to provide face-to-face and video learning for coaches in two areas: ‘coaching at the front of the room’, and ‘engaging organizations in the coaching conversation’, and
  • enrolling organizations and business in hosting demonstration coaching sessions in their establishments

At the end of the year we’ll evaluate the initiative to discover what worked well and what might need to change.

 What we are looking for:

We are looking for facilitators/trainers to provide face-to-face workshops in two areas:

  • ONE: how to ‘coach at the front of the room’, and
  • TWO: how to ‘engage organizations in the coaching conversation’

These workshops must be interactive and must include opportunities for participants to use and practice the skills they are learning.

*Facilitators need to be available to provide training between May and August 2017.

Please note we are a non-profit organization and due to a limited budget, we do not pay for speakers or their travel or other costs.

PREPARING YOUR PROPOSAL

Review the ICF Definition of Coaching on the ICF website, which is the WHAT of ICF coaching;

Review the ICF Core Competencies and the ICF Ethics & Standards on the ICF website – these define the HOW of ICF coaching.

Determine how your presentation/workshop can best address the community relations project objectives.

Please ensure that your presentation/workshop focuses on education and learning rather than promotion or marketing of your business/product.

ICF CCEU’s – please indicate if you have delivered this type of training to other ICF chapters and previously received ICF approved CCEU’s. If your proposal is accepted and you do not have pre-approved CCEU’s we will work with you to initiate a chapter request to ICF Global on your behalf.

Submission Format: – please provide a 200-word summary of your approach and indicate *suggested dates for availability

Email your completed proposal submission to events@vicoaches.org by noon (Pacific) on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

 

* We will be reviewing numerous proposals and a consistent format allows us to appropriately review and assess your proposal. Proposals that are submitted in a different format will be returned.

AFTER YOUR PROPOSAL IS RECEIVED

We will acknowledge receipt of your proposal within five business days and will respond with our decision regarding your proposal within 30 days of the closing date for submissions.

Our review will consider the following criteria:

  • Presentation meets ICF guidelines for training
  • Topic addresses community relations project objectives
  • Presenter respects our commitment to minimize self-promotion or product sales
  • Educational Value; your approach and content will enable coached to deliver on the project objectives
  • Speaker addresses needs of all coach experience levels

After acceptance of your proposal we will send you more specific information pertinent to scheduling your presentation.
