Unleashing Possibility: Member Voices

Many of you took the time to come out and talk to members of your local Chapter Board in Victoria and Nanaimo at two evenings at the beginning of November.

Our intention was to engage with you, our members, to ask some questions and to hear what you’re looking for from your local ICF Chapter.

We appreciate that the dialogue was rich and energetic.  From the initial introductions to the wrap-up with hugs and promises to be in touch, both personally and professionally, it was clear that our chapter is blessed with many talented and enthusiastic coaches.

The questions posed ranged from professional designation, CCEU’s (Continuing Coach Education Units), ways to connect with other coaches in your community through to specifics on the best way to connect with you all.  The questions were approached in true collaborative style with sticky notes, coloured pens on whiteboards and lots of conversation to reach consensus.

We heard that professional designation was important because it provided credibility and a standardized body of knowledge.  We found that the chapter role is important for learning opportunities and continuing education credits.  You told us that the CCE topics that covered business development, mindfulness and culture were of the most interest.  Connecting with other coaches serves you with shared experiences, inspiration and learning and growing together.  You described how you want to be involved in your chapter by attending events and meetings, creating the possibility of cooperation and collaboration and having events live in your community and online.  Communication was discussed and having more chances to get to know other members in REAL conversations, empowering greater coaching in the community and sharing ideas through personal phone calls, face to face socials and emails works for you.

Hosting meet ups and informal gatherings for coaches to connect was a topic we heard from both venues.

The recent phone calls to members were welcomed and this led on to conversations about the value of face-to-face connections, and the importance of widening our exposure in the broader community.

Your 2018 Board will take the key findings from the two events and develop their strategic plan around this feedback.

Connecting with your community – ICF Vancouver Island Chapter AGM – December 9, 2017

The ICF Vancouver Island Charter Chapter Board is a body of up to nine elected members who govern local affairs and clearly define its goals and measures of success based on information and input from the membership. There is the expectation for the Board to be very proactive in seeking the membership support and feedback.  We take the opportunity to elect our Board at our Annual General Meeting.

EXECUTIVE

President: Tracy Houser – Victoria: second, one-year term

Tracy Houser is a strong, thoughtful communicator who is passionate about coaching and growth and development. She focuses her energy on bringing out the best in people. Ever curious and open to new possibilities, she fuels her passion through her own constant learning and leadership development.

Tracy holds a Masters in Fine Arts and several certifications in coaching, mentoring and change management. She is credentialed as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) through the ICF. Her career experience ranges from small business to consulting, university teaching to international touring, and private industry to public service.

Although she is currently the Director of the Change Management Office at the Natural Resource Transformation Secretariat in the BC Public Service, she believes that “leader” is not a title you are given, it is how you choose to show up.  So, despite her official title, her self-caption on her imaginary business card is “Possibility Artist”.

I see the Vancouver Island Chapter as a vibrant organization that connects members around the island to advance the coaching profession.  We gather to learn together, share insights and best practices, develop awareness in the community of the value and impact of coaching, and to be part of global coaching trends. 

We do what we can to advance coaching, with what we have, from where we are – holding space to honour and advance coaching here on Vancouver Island.

 

Vice President: Cheryl Joslin – Metchosin

Cheryl is a strategic thinker with a passion for helping business leaders from all levels transform cultures, improve communication, and inspire their businesses to thrive.  She has 35 years’ experience working in the service industry with corporations and business owners, and has held leadership position at multiple companies including McDonald’s, Cobs Bread, and KFC/Taco Bell.

Cheryl is an ICF credentialed coach, a Certified Executive Coach and a trained facilitator with extensive experience developing executing training programs for McDonald’s Restaurants.  She is fiercely committed to her clients’ success and provides the support they need to exceed their goals and foster growth within their companies.

Known for asking questions that get to the heart of the matter, Cheryl’s style supports her clients to make choices that decide their success.  When applied to an entire workforce or organization, this can have an amazing effect on the quality of work and overall company performance.

My vision is to be an integral part of inspiring the members and the chapter to thrive by attracting and developing the highest quality of professional coaches.

 

Secretary: Kim Arsenault – Nanaimo

Kim has a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Royal Roads University. She holds a ACC designation with ICF. Kim has a caring and engaging presence. She coaches and assists leaders in attaining the best re­sults from themselves and their people. Kim is an experienced consultant and coach who continuously receives excellent reviews from clients.

My vision is that our Vancouver Island chapter be accessible to all members and provide support and education for coaches at all levels. I have seen a very successful chapter grow and really address members needs in the last few years and have been interested in contributing to that.

Varek Boettcher –  Victoria

I have always been curious. I was that kid that took things apart to see how they worked. As I grew older that curiosity developed into a passion for technology and I turned it into an IT career working in the public and private sectors for more than twenty-six years.

My wife recently completed her M.A. in Leadership at RRU. As she was graduating, our discussions turned to where I wanted to take my career. As soon as she showed me the coaching program it seemed like such a natural fit for me.  I graduated in May of 2017.

As a newly minted executive coach, I’m very interested in the experiences of new graduates and addressing some of the issues they experience.  How does one start a coaching practice?  What are the steps?  Where are the pitfalls?  How can one leverage the experience of veteran coaches in support of new graduates?

My vision is of a group of passionate coaches that look for opportunities to support our local community in developing themselves, their skills and their businesses.

 

Gina Ross –  Nanaimo as of Jan 2018

Gina Ross is a professional life coach, event leader and speaker committed to freedom through authentic expression. She leads and coaches aspiring entrepreneurial women who want to ‘find their voice’, so they can begin their soul’s work. In a world inundated with messages that we have to be something other than who we truly are. These messages often creep into how we build our businesses. Or they prevent us from ever beginning to live the lives we deeply want.

Gina’s coaching supports aspiring entrepreneurs to find, heal and share their voice – the authentic expression that wants to have impact with the people they serve. Gina graduated from and is affiliated with accomplishment coaching and has been in business for three years. In her past life she was a certified counsellor, and brings a playful and spiritual intuition along for the ride in all her work.

My vision is that we have over 200 members who are engaged, connected and contributing to the Chapter by the end of 2018. This chapter can be an inspired and powerful conduit for all coaches in our catchment and I believe we can truly be an organization that supports all coaches to thrive in their businesses.

 

Janet Sheppard – Cobble Hill

As a coach with a background in psychology and education, I am passionate about supporting people as they challenge themselves to learn, grow, and change in the pursuit of their goals and dreams.  My previous career in higher education has also fuelled my own desire to learn continuously. As I move into this new phase of my own professional development, I am excited to meet and learn from my coaching colleagues too. I find this emerging profession stimulating and rewarding and I see belonging to the local chapter of the ICF as an opportunity to be part of contributing to its development too.

One thing I loved most of all in my previous career was supporting people who were open to learning, growing, and changing in an integrated way, transforming their sense of self as they challenged themselves to navigate their academic learning and their personal and life/work paths.

It’s that transformative possibility that continues to fuel my passion for learning as a coach.

My vision is for the Vancouver Island Chapter to grow and flourish by building relationships with new and emerging coaches through local and, eventually, distance coaching programs. I see the coaching community as a ‘learning community’, or a series of linked communities of practice.

I have had some of my richest and most rewarding experiences participating in a community of practice with other professionals – social learning is an important part of professional identity development. To engage new coaches early in their careers and provide opportunities to participate in social and situated learning is a way to contribute to their professional learning, but also to the emerging profession of coaching.

Michael Atkins – Victoria

Michael Atkins is a Certified Executive Coach, who specializes in leadership development. A scholar and practitioner of leadership, he holds a Masters of Arts in Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching; moreover, he has also completed Royal Military College of Canada’s Intermediate Leadership Program, a program only offered to select military leaders. With over 17 years of military experience, he has become extremely proficient in developing high performance teams capable of dealing with high-stake situations. Should he be elected as a member of the board, Michael is extremely motivated to work hard in support of the VI ICF constituency at large.

I would like to become engaged with supporting the local coaching community. In that, I would like to use my time as a board member to promote the needs of the VI ICF constituency at large.

It’s that time when we weigh-in and commit to advancing the coaching profession at the local and global levels.  Yup, the local chapter is looking for new board members!

So, what might a board experience give you? Well there’s insight and connection to what’s happening what’s globally; connections locally and internationally; opportunities to learn and try out new coaching and leadership skills; places to collaborate on projects and initiatives…and FUN with people who just might become part of your tribe!

Executive positions – for leaders and emerging leaders – with a commitment to expanding the profile of the profession, formalizing the strategic direction of the chapter, and enriching the experiences of chapter members.

Coaching for engagement and connection – a special learning and development opportunity

Coaching for engagement and connection

A learning and development opportunity to expand your front-of-the-room coaching skills and your network of coaching colleagues, and to help your communities experience the impact of professional coaching.

WHY and HOW

We know that coaching is not about telling – it is about demonstrating impact. Through face-to-face workshops, webinars and practical experiences this program will expand the skills needed to coach at the front of the room and to open the coaching conversation with businesses or organizations.  And, as part of the program you’ll create demonstration opportunities by connecting with community businesses and organizations so they can experience the impact of professional coaching.  We’ll celebrate the learning and the impact with a week of coaching-at the-front-of-the-room during International Coaching Week – May 7th – 13th, 2018.

WHO IS THIS FOR

Developed, in collaboration with Lily Seto, PCC, the program is open to accredited ICF Vancouver Island chapter members who have at least an ACC designation. You’ll also need to be an effective communicator, flexible and have some experience in group and team coaching.

WHEN and WHAT

Running from September 2017 to May 2018, the program starts with a face-to-face workshop on September 23, 2017, followed by two 90-minute webinars in October and January.

From October through March you’ll engage with local organizations and businesses and do two, community practice sessions. The program ends during International Coaching Week, May 7 to 13 with you completing at least two coaching-at the-front-of-the-room demonstrations in local businesses or organizations.

 

YOUR GUIDE FOR THIS WORK

Lily Seto, MA, PCC, AOCS

Lily is an experienced Human Resources and Organizational Development Consultant who has been coaching professionally for over 12 years. Her practice focusses on coaching to develop leaders and mentoring and coaching supervision of coaches who want to “up their game”.  She has also designed and trained trainers in various courses and workshops.

She also works closely with leadership teams, coaching and mentoring them to take a coaching approach to their leadership style. She is also a certified Fierce Conversations facilitator and one of six trained coaching supervisors in Canada.

Lily works internationally and is the past president of the ICF Vancouver Island Chapter, where she devoted her volunteer time to engaging the Chapter coaches in connection and development. She is the 2016 recipient of the Royal Roads University Coaching Award through Leadership Victoria and has been appointed an Independent Review Board member for the International Coach Federation Ethics committee.

 

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

As part of the program you’ll be asked to:

  • secure opportunities to demonstrate coaching ‘at the front of the room’ in organizations or businesses;
  • invest a minimum of 3 hours per month from September 2017 to May 2018 in either training on how to coach from the front of the room or in coaching demos within organizations;
  • share coaching-at the-front-of-the-room with local organizations and businesses in celebration of International Coaching Week in May 2018, and
  • debrief and improve the program.

COST

$250.00 for the workshop and webinars. Potential rebate of $100 when you secure two community demos during 2018 International Coaching Week.WHAT NEXT
